3.11.2022- More than Entertaining

“As a music therapist, having produced an album about the human condition–about anxiety, ADD, and the whole spectrum of what we’re doing, it’s…it’s just such an honor to create art that does more than entertain.”

–Jon Samson, Music Therapist accepting a Grammy for his work on the album, Ageless: Songs for the Child Archetype.

To be clear: I love entertainers. They put their own lives and talents on display for the rest of us to enjoy, demonstrating a kind of courage that takes great strength to find. Creators of all kinds, the musicians, painters, dancers, sculptors, actors, they all provide a great service that we can turn to when our lives become monotonous or overwhelming and we need an escape.

Music Therapy takes those artful elements and flips them around for the listener to benefit from on a deeper level. Psychology combines with the music to assist people struggling with addiction, seniors with dementia, children dealing with mental health problems, women going through childbirth, as just a few examples. Because music captures the whole of human experience in such a beautiful and profound way, it is an incredible vessel to hold our strengths and needs as we work on therapeutic goals. This is why I love being a music therapist.
